FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE

The 5th Annual Cairns Blues FestivalThe 5th annual Cairns Blues Festival celebrated a fantastic day and night of music on Fitzroy Island over the weekend and organisers were thrilled with the result. Even the threat of rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd and from all accounts, punters and artists alike were impressed by the choice of new venue for this year’s festival.

Cairns Blues Festival committee president Pauline Langley said the vibe at this year’s event was definitely more relaxed. “Simply by not being encaged in fencing, but instead being surrounded by the beautiful rainforest and sea in a friendly and sheltered environment made a big difference to the general atmosphere of the festival,” she said. The fact the venue on Fitzroy Island was all-weather was also appealing, according to organisers.

This year’s festival saw the likes of New Zealand’s Billy TK Jnr, festival favourites Hat Fitz and Cara Robinson and the return of Mason Rack Band headline the event. The event kicked off at 12pm with local blueswoman Carinda Christie and saw performances by Rockabilly Blues Xpress, Luke R. Davies, The Hillbilly Goats, Sugarcane Collins, Bluesville Station and Blake Saban 3. The program wrapped up at 11pm with the last boat leaving the island at 1.30am.

Ms Langley said the feedback the committee received from the artists performing praised the choice of venue. “The artists had nothing but praise and appreciation for the venue, for all the crew who assisted them, for the island staff and for all the personnel along each step of the way from hotels to restaurants,” she said. “They were all appreciative of the terrific North Queensland hospitality that has been shown to them over the weekend and all commented on the smooth running of the festival.”

Plans are already underway for the 2014 event, which will mark the sixth year since the inception of the Cairns Blues Festival. Details will be announced via the festival’s website in coming weeks. Ms Langley said it was likely that the festival would return to Fitzroy Island Resort next year.
