DragonOnce in a while an event comes along that marks a piece of music history, and Dragon’s upcoming 500 concert at The Bridge Hotel is destined to be one of those memorable occasions. The legendary rock n roll warriors celebrate their 500th show of the ‘Phoenix Years’ with a massive concert traversing all their hits.

Dragon historian Anthony Guarrera noted that there were three key eras in Dragon’s four decade history – the Young Years, the Glory Years and the Phoenix Years. The ‘Young Years’ range from 1973 – 1979, the ‘Glory Years’ from 1982 – 1998 and the ‘Phoenix Years’ from 2006 to goodness knows when! The Phoenix Years feature the current line-up of the band, Todd Hunter, Mark Williams, Pete Drummond and Bruce Reid. Since this incarnation of the band in 2006 they’ve played to people 499 times with the 500th show booked for The Bridge Hotel on July 27. From the Rhythm and Vines Festival, huge events of 500,000 plus people to intimate club gigs of 100 where the whole crowd are up dancing on the tables, Dragon continue to play every show like it is their last.

“I think people come to Dragon shows to be swept up in a kind of euphoria that happens when a crowd of people sing together and forget their problems for a while,” says Todd Hunter. Since last November, Dragon have completed their 40th Anniversary tour throughout New Zealand and Australia, been part of the Long Way to the Top tour, the Red Hot Summer tour and many gigs in between. Their most recent string of dates, celebrating four decades in Australia kicked off at the Sydney Opera House and has seen them perform in some of the country’s most impressive venues. Todd says the band is really looking forward to playing at The Bridge Hotel. “The Bridge Hotel is one of the few rock venues left in Sydney,” he says. “When we play there it’s brash, noisy and lots of fun. We set our amps to stun and go for it.”

With the 500th show marking the halfway point for 1000 shows for the Phoenix Years, Todd admits there are too many memorable times to mention. “New highlights keep happening all of the time,” he says. “For instance we played at The Gov in Adelaide for the first time last Saturday and it was totally wild and by far the best night we have ever had in South Australia.” Now they’re looking forward to making The Bridge Hotel one of those unforgettable shows.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dragon dominated the Australian music scene. Their live shows were unsurpassed and their notorious rock n roll lifestyle was well documented. Ever since then, they’ve continued to release hits, pack live music houses and earn a swag of fans throughout New Zealand and Australia. In 1977, Dragon won Best New Group and in 1978 won the Outstanding Local Achievement award for the then Australian music awards TV Week King of Pop Awards. In July 2008, Dragon were again recognised by their adoptive country when they were inducted into the Australian ARIA Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

There are few bands whose music is as pertinent today as it was four decades ago, but legendary rock n roll warriors Dragon can claim this virtue. With an infectious raft of hits such as April Sun in Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Still in Love with You, Rain, Young Years and Dreams of Ordinary Men, plus many more, Dragon have cemented themselves into the Australian psyche.
