FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
In a very special series of shows, legendary rock band Dragon are taking to the stage for the start of their Dragon celebrates… gigs. Kicking off the series with shows in Sydney and Melbourne, Dragon celebrates The Police will deliver an evening of spectacular music, from Dragon’s greatest hits, to the band’s unique interpretations of The Police’s extensive back catalogue. This is a new concept for the band who constantly fill venues throughout Australia and New Zealand. Dragon, which is now comprised of Todd Hunter (bass), Mark Williams (lead vocals/acoustic guitar), Bruce Reid (electric guitar) and Pete Drummond (drums), have recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary of playing fantastic music.
Founding member Todd Hunter says the idea was based on how enjoyable it is to play great songs. “This version of the band is very musically literate,” he says. “The other guys can play all sorts of music and invest it with a spirit and originality that is unique. We love to play great songs no matter where they come from and this series is a chance to put some of the music we love under the microscope and reincarnate it the Dragon way.”
Picking Dragon celebrates The Police as the first run of shows was an easy decision. In fact, the track Message in a Bottle is already often part of the Dragon playlist with Pete on vocals. “Bruce started playing Message one night when we were mucking about on stage,” Todd explains. “The crowd went nuts and now we play it most nights. Pete has an amazing voice and it works really well. Mark, Pete and Bruce are all great singers and it’s good to share the lead vocals around sometimes. We first bumped into The Police at Countdown in Melbourne and we loved them because they were even more arrogant than we were and they were the perfect pop stars of the time. They had an unbeatable combination of great songs, incredible playing and an inscrutable ‘screw you’ attitude. I saw them years later at The Giants stadium in New York where they reformed for an Amnesty Benefit with people like Peter Gabriel and Miles Davis. They came on, played through their hits at an incredible speed and got out of there. Brilliant!”
Selecting the songs for Dragon celebrates The Police is a joint effort between the band. “First, does everyone know the song?” Todd says. “Then, does anyone in the band hate a particular song under discussion – therefore it’s out – and most importantly, can we bring something to the song that makes it live and breathe when we play it, and not just be a cover. After a particular song clears all those hurdles, we’ll play it. It’s easy to get inside The Police songs and play the hell out of them. Structurally they are very satisfying and you can really attack them or lay back while the crowd holds up the chorus melody. It makes for a really enjoyable and immersive show.”
Added in amongst the song selection from The Police will of course be a swag of Dragon’s greatest hits, such as April Sun in Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Still in Love with You, Rain, Young Years and Dreams of Ordinary Men, plus many more.
