FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
Superstar of Australian comedy, Fiona O’Loughlin will take audiences on a never-heard-before ride with her new Melbourne International Comedy Festival show My Brilliant Career. The show is a journey throughout her 15-year career in showbiz that will shock you, make you laugh and make you squirm. Touted as one of the nation’s finest stand-up comedians, there is no doubt Fiona has some hilarious tales to tell.
Writing the show for this year’s festival was an interesting retrospective tour over her career. As she put the finishing touches on her show at the end of the last year, Fiona couldn’t wait to share it with audiences. “To be honest, I think there’s something mentally wrong with me,” she laughs. “I’m telling true stories in this show that are so shocking, I had to have a special lie down for three days when I finished writing it.”
The stories from Fiona’s career will be entertaining to say the least. She admits that most of them are derived from embarrassing situations, stories that most people wouldn’t share in a public forum. But then again, Fiona isn’t most people. Living in Alice Springs for most of her life, this mother of five has created a career from the heart of the Australian desert to the hearts of audiences around the world, earning herself the much deserved title of ‘Queen of Australian comedy’.
She certainly has had a ‘brilliant career’. She’s performed around the world, headlining LA’s world-renowned Improv Comedy Club, playing repeat seasons in Hong Kong, Edinburgh Fringe, Montreal’s invitation-only Just For Laughs and the UK’s oldest and highly respected Leicester Comedy Club. Fiona has also been a regular face on popular television shows such as Sunrise, Good News Week, Spicks and Specks, Talkin’ Bout Your Generation, The World’s Standup, Celebrity Apprentice and too many comedy festival galas to count. She is a two-time Barry Award nominee, two-time Helpmann Award nominee and winner of the Piece of Wood Award.
The glimpses into Fiona’s career that she’ll share with audiences at the festival include stories from her experiences both overseas and at home in Australia. She says one story that springs to mind is the time she met her acting idol Aiden Quinn in Edinburgh. “The whole scenario was going so pear-shaped I actually nearly fainted,” she says.
