FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
Single Blue Haze is released to radio nationally on Friday 29 August 2014
Byron Bay-based singer songwriter Ray Sorenson brings over 40 years of experience as a musician to the fore with the release of the first single Blue Haze off of his forthcoming debut long player Silent Writer. A well-known musical force on the North Coast of NSW, Ray has spent most of his life writing and touring the region, however never found the right time to dedicate to releasing an album of his own material. Now in his 50s, this accomplished musician has set out to record an album that is the perfect representation of his life. The Blue Haze single is the start of a new journey for the father of two and one that looks set to welcome him into the Australian country scene with open arms.
Blue Haze is actually a song that was penned early one morning in the 1980s and was picked as the first single off of his debut offering due to popular demand at Ray’s live shows. It is one of those tracks that draws you in from the outset and has an Australian twang to it, leaving the song in your head well after it’s stopped playing. It hooks the listener in and is an apt representation of Ray’s songwriting nuance.
“I recall writing the song, it was all in a tremendous flourish and when I stopped and looked down, the messy writing on the page resembled a Doctor’s Prescription pad,” he says. “After analysing what I had just written, I rearranged the words into a usable format and created some melodies to form a listenable song. The inspiration for the song came when my very close friend’s father passed away about two-weeks previous. It hit my friend pretty hard. I played Blue Haze to him and told him that the intense emotions we were experiencing had opened up a channel for the song to be born. However, Blue Haze doesn’t come across as a song that has an obvious message, in some ways it can be an intriguing mystery. It allows the audience to relate to it in their own way. I know why it was written, but that is only my version of the song.”
The track was recorded with revered ARIA award winning producer Steve James [Thin Lizzy, The Screaming Jets, Mental As Anything, The McClymonts] at Rockinghorse Recording Studios and features an impressive line-up of musicians all with different backgrounds and influences. Dean Sutherland (bass) and Warwick Scott (lead guitar) were founding members of iconic Aussie band Skunkhour; Lawrie Minson (pedal steel guitar) is a well-known name and acclaimed for his instrumentation; and Ray Scott (harmonica) is one of the best harmonica players in the country.
“I recall watching Steve work, he is a one-man show, frantic at times, but he does a truly amazing job with the science of the music, almost like a musical Doctor Who,” says Ray. “The foundation for the song was created first and then Steve and I discussed the tempo of the song and what instruments would be needed to get the sound we wanted.”
The film clip for Blue Haze was recorded between Ray’s father’s house in Northern NSW and a studio in Mullumbimby. Filmed and edited by Jack Atley, the clip is a great insight into Ray’s effortless style and gives the audience a glimpse into the personality of this amazing musician. It is certainly a great representation of what Ray Sorenson and his music is all about. It is rare to meet a musician of Ray’s calibre, who has been diligently working away on his sound for decades, honing his craft before stepping into the spotlight.
Ray’s forthcoming album Silent Writer certainly is the culmination of years of hard work and something he is immensely proud of, and rightly so. “This album in many respects, represents a piece of me and I am tremendously keen to share myself with the Australian music industry,” he says. “There have been so many years, so many moments, so much history captured in these distinctly Australian songs. There is only one way to describe what it’s like… bloody fantastic!”
