Peter Helliar - Docklands Arts, Laughs & Blues FestivalThe Docklands Arts, Laughs & Blues Festival kicks off this October with a stellar line-up of comedy entertainment and arts events to delight the whole family. Hosted within the Docklands entertainment hub, including the beautiful Wonderland Spiegeltent, the program includes five days of circus, cabaret, stand-up comedy, illusion, puppetry, burlesque, art spaces and movies will culminates on the fifth day with the Docklands Blues Music Festival. From the Spellbound Illusion Spectacular and Family Day, to the Comedy Gala and Elixir, as well as the adults only Vamp & Burn, there is something for all ages.

What started off as a one off event, has evolved into an annual festival on the Melbourne calendar that brings locals and tourists alike to the Docklands precinct. Festival director Melissa Davis says it has been growing every year and now offers several ticketed and free events for all ages. “It gives patrons multiple visitor options and return visitor experiences, whether the family comes to the illusion show in the Wonderland Spiegeltent or Mum and Dad come for a night out,” she says. “Or patrons may return for a flight on the Melbourne Star experience… the festival brings revenue to the local businesses.”

Events kick off on Wednesday 1st October and run through until Sunday 5th October. Launching the five-day festival is the Spellbound Illusion Spectacular which runs from Wednesday 1st October until Sunday 5th October and is an event for the whole family live in the Wonderland Spiegeltent starring world class illusionist Michael Boyd. An entertainment extravaganza unlike any other with amazing illusions such as levitations and transportations, spectacular dancers, beautiful costumes and the amazing Thurston the Duck appearing and disappearing daily! It is a show for the whole family and will leave you wanting more!

Circus fans will be delighted by Elixir on Thursday 2nd October and Saturday 4th October. Three acrobatic and enthusiastic scientists attempt to create the elixir of life. The scenes are an eclectic mix of high intensity acrobatics, live music and projections all blended into one incredible contemporary circus show. The high tech laboratory is the setting, the subjects of the tests are the researchers themselves and the subsequent acrobatic mayhem is world class. With some of the rarest apparatus in the world, these three have mastered circus skills thought impossible, truly original and amazing.

The Wonderland Fun Park Family Day on Saturday 4th October has something for all ages. It features face painting, life-size roving puppets and free balloon animals, as well as a puppet making workshop. There is also Snap’s Kakadu Clubwith Lindi Jane at 11.30am and the Tiniest Show on Earth from 1pm-4pm. One of Australia’s leading female Ventriloquist Lindi Jane presents Snap’s Kakadu Club, featuring Snap Crocodilous, the cheeky crocodile from Kakadu. Snap introduces you to his Kakadu mates, Dazey Wallabee, Fluffi-Feline, Sniffer Dog and new puppet Ringo Tan and Doofus Interrupts! This performance features clever ventriloquism, songs, educational themes, feel good and healthy concepts, games, dance and comedy.

At Tiniest Show on Earth, the Curator is the original Minute Exhibit and has travelled internationally to great audience acclaim. Universally adored, the Curator is surprising, interactive sweet and suitable for all ages, although it was originally developed for adults. A curator is organising his newest exhibition and something seems to be missing… how can he… what does he need… aha! It seems one audience member can provide it. On Saturday’s Family Day at the Wonderland Fun Park, the puppet making workshops run from 12.30pm-1.30pm and face painting is available from 12pm-3pm. Life-size roving puppets will be at the fun park at 3pm, and the free balloon animals will be made onsite from 11am-1pm and 3pm-4pm.

The Comedy Gala on Saturday 4th October is a 90-minute show that will delight audiences. World class comedy will rock the Wonderland Spiegeltent with headliners Peter Helliar and Bob Franklin, sprinkled with some burlesque and circus performances and special comedy guests. Peter Helliar needs no introduction to Australian comedy fans, he was a star of the long-running Rove television show and has sold-out multiple shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He penned the feature I Love You, and also starred in the film alongside Peter Dinklage and AFL superstar ‘Strauchanie’. This year he has graced Australian television screens on The Project and is currently writing and directing a follow-up season to his hit series It’s A Date. Bob Franklin is another comedy royalty and has called Australia home since the 1980s. The Welsh-born comedian has appeared on multiple television shows including Jimeoin, Shaun Micallef’s World Around Him, The Mick Molloy Show and Eric to name a few. He has also acted in television dramas such as Stingers, Kangaroo Palace and After the Deluge.

On Saturday 4th October the impressive Vamp & Burn show delights late night audiences. Following a sensationally successful debut season in 2013, Vamp & Burn returns to Wonderland Spiegeltent with another hit of untamed, improvised burlesque to decadent, sensual blues. This year, there is a French twist to the event, with Lola The Vamp providing lead vocals as well as the firebrand headlining burlesque that has been scandalising audiences for the past decade. Joining her a veritable who’s who of Australian burlesque, carefully selected to perfectly match the European vibe of this very special Vamp & Burn. La Vie!
