FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE

women in docs

Australia’s indie sweethearts women in docs are hitting the road this October for a special run of shows throughout the southern states. Celebrating the release of their latest single Wagon Wheel, the duo – Chanel Lucas and Roz Pappalardo – will be not only performing tracks from their album Carousel, released earlier this year, but also new previously unheard material.

Roz says they will be rolling out some new songs and possibly also some new instruments on this tour. “We’ve been travelling with the ukulele for a few months now, but we think the banjo is going to make an appearance,” she says. “We’re also very excited to be performing a number of new songs that we have recently written. New songs always bring a sense of the unexpected to a show and it really keeps us on our toes, so we look forward to that.”

The run of tour dates for the Queensland-based musicians are focused around Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. “We were lucky enough to be invited to be on the bill of a special intimate regional South Australian festival, the Fleurieu Folk Festival,” says Roz. “From there we were able to link together some nice shows. We decided to focus this year on the southern states and we think ending our touring for the year in Adelaide is quite fitting… particularly as we’re fans of the wine…”

Their new single Wagon Wheel is a cover of the Bob Dylan / Old Crow Medicine song. It is a track that women in docs have been performing live for a while. “We learnt it while on tour in the USA,” says Chanel. “It has proved to be a very popular song with our audience, so we decided to record it and release it on our latest album.”

In true women in docs style, the duo are turning to their fans to help produce the film clip for Wagon Wheel. The duo are setting music lovers a challenge to record themselves performing the song, which is the final track on their latest album. They will then pick a mixture of clips and put them together to create the video. “Our fans have always been fantastic at helping us out with our music,” says Chanel. “All our albums have been created via crowd-funding from our fans – and that was before crowd-funding even existed online. So we thought we would ask them to help us make a video clip for Wagon Wheel.”

women in docs released their third long-player Carousel in February this year to critical acclaim. They first sung their way into the hearts of the Australian music loving public in the late 1990s with their self-titled EP. Two EPs followed – www.womenindocs.com (2000) and Times Like These (2005) – and two full length albums – Under a Different Sky (2003) and Red Wine & Postcards (2006). Chanel Lucas [acoustic guitar | vocals | bass | ukulele] and Roz Pappalardo [acoustic guitar | vocals | harmonica | electric guitar] have since gained fans around the world. They’ve toured rigorously endearing audiences in North America, Europe, New Zealand and Canada. Dubbed as festival favourites, they’ve performed at the likes of SXSW, Shanghai Spring Music Festival and the International Folk Festival in Germany to name a few. Back at home, they’ve been on the bill at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Big Day Out, Woodford Folk Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Well-known as one of the hardest working outfits on the touring scene, women in docs never sit back on their laurels. In fact, despite only recently releasing an album, they’re already writing songs for the next album and looking to the future for more tours. “We are also looking to head back overseas to the USA and possibly Europe,” says Chanel. “We have spent many years touring the US and have developed a strong fan-base there. This latest album has generated interest in the European market and we have had emails from radio stations and record labels in Europe expressing their interest in seeing us tour there. Start saving everyone!”
