FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
Australian music legend Russell Morris returns to The Reef Hotel Casino this month for two massive nights of great music. More than 40 years after his breakthrough hit – the Molly Meldrum-produced psychedelic masterpiece, The Real Thing – Russell Morris successfully reinvented himself as a superb bluesman. His albums Sharkmouth and Van Dieman’s Land comprise of roots-derived songs that demonstrate his versatility of a performer.
Already a major pop star by the time The Real Thing was released, Russell went on to become one of the country's most recognised singer-songwriters. He penned such iconic hits as Wings of an Eagle, Sweet Sweet Love, The Girl That I Love and many more. In the early 70s Russell made the almost obligatory trip overseas and spent a few years living and working in London and New York. Returning to his homeland he enjoyed many long years as a touring singer-songwriter as the frontman of the Russell Morris Band and, later, as the best-selling Russell Morris and the Rubes.
Like all good musicians who earned their chops in the days before the birth of social media, Russell’s musical fortunes have hung often on his abilities to entertain a live audience. As a result he is a consummate showman, able to power through his early hits with coltish exuberance, while also investing his more reflective late period-work with the sort of gravitas and control they deserve. Throughout the years he has worked with music greats such as Cher, The Bee Gees, The Beach Boys and Linda Ronstadt.
Local singer songwriter Chris Ah Gee opens the evening on Friday & Saturday night with his catchy alternative pop. A self-taught musician, he previously spent some time fronting a blues band before launching his solo career. He has also performed as the frontman of a 21-piece big band and is fast earning himself a stellar reputation around the North.
The party continues on the Friday night after Russell’s performance with a late night evening in the company of ever-popular local favourites Mr. Smith. The group, led by the enigmatic Giles Smith, has earned a stellar reputation in the Far North over the past few years for their rock solid foundations in blues. They’re attendees of major festivals and all the band have extensive experience in the live and recording arenas. The band’s members have individually supported and worked alongside the likes of Jenny Morris, Dragon, The Drifters, Ian Moss and Peter Murray, to name a few.
On Saturday night the party raves on after Russell’s set with one of the North’s favourite cover bands, The Tall Poppies. The band has been quoted as “playing the songs you love to hear, the way you love to hear them” and their live show never disappoints. Their repertoire ranges from 70s soul, R&B, funk, 80s, disco and even some Top 40 hits.
Even after all these years, Russell Morris is still considered to be the real thing. His shows at The Reef Hotel Casino will be events truly not to be missed.
Russell Morris performs at Vertigo Cocktail Bar & Lounge in The Reef Hotel Casino on Friday 29 & Saturday 30 May from 8.30pm nightly. Chris A Gee opens each evening’s entertainment and the party continues with Mr Smith on Friday and The Tall Poppies on Saturday. *** These are free shows at Vertigo
