FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
Vertigolive | Friday 19th & Saturday 20th June 2015 | 9pm nightly
Far North Queensland audiences are in for a party treat when Kellie Knight and The Daze head to Cairns at the end of June for two special nights of live music at The Reef Hotel Casino. The band sound like a blend of your favourite retro-soul, mixed with gansta funk back beat, and a swirl of jazz and hip hop. Shaken up all together, their music will go down like a smooth martini.
The NSW North Coast-based group were brought together by their mutual love of soul, funk and jazz greats and they haven’t stopped playing great music since. Their distinct brand of jazz is influenced by Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse and James Brown to name a few. With inspiration of this pedigree, it’s not surprising the Kellie Knight and The Daze are heating up the Australian music scene. This year their debut single Twisted was released and won over some pretty influential fans. The single was judged Jazz Song of the Year by Kirk Pengilly (INXS) and Mark Gable (Choirboys) at the 2015 NCEIA Music Awards - and that was before the final mix was even submitted! That’s a pretty big coup for a band’s debut release but it was exceptionally well deserved.
Kellie Knight’s smooth whiskey vocals come from a diverse background of training. As a solo artist, Kellie has been a bit of a globe-trotter for the last few years. She spent two years in the golden city of San Francisco before heading the India for 6 months studying vocal arrangements. She has since returned to her home in Byron Bay where she attended the Conservatorium of Music in The Northern Rivers NSW area. It was at the Conservatorium that she really found her signature, smoky jazz vocals settling on a niche sound that suits her perfectly. She has brought her catchy pop licks and soulful groove to festivals around the world. She’s made waves from the stage at the Michigan Women’s Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival, Adelaide Fringe, and Port Fairy Music Festival. She comes from a musical family and her powerful love of music is felt in her commanding stage presence.
Kellie’s slick vocals are backed by The Daze: Paul Brewer on bass, Jamie Pattugalan on drums, Dan Brown on keyboard, Matt Day on guitar and Shaston King on saxophone. The Daze formed in 2011 in their home town of Byron Bay where they cut their teeth in late night dive bars. They’ve since moved out into the open air; playing at some of Australia’s favourite festivals, including the Byron Bay Blues Festival and Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Together they bring a fresh new sound and all-encompassing good vibrations to the stage. Fans of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Adel and Aretha Franklin will appreciate Kellie’s impressive vocal ability. It’s not surprising is she being included in the list impressive slew of powerful female voices who have made an indelible imprint on the music scene. Her voice and The Daze’s music combine to make a serious memories as they play their original songs, but it is their unique approach to jazz, funk and soul favourites really bring an enchanting new groove to the stage.
