FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
The Reef Hotel Casino is expanding its entertainment spectrum to encompass comedy with two special debut events flagged for this June. Launching with Comedy Trivia in the Sports Arena on Thursday 18th June featuring Sydney stand-up Steve Philp, the ‘charity challenge’ event is not only a chance for trivia nuts to score themselves some incredible prizes, but funds from the night will also be donated to Relay for Life. The comedy fun continues with Comedy in the Arena on Friday 19th June hosted by familiar face Terry Doyle and featuring a special guest appearance by Steve Philp.
Entertainment manager Bruce Stewart says the complex is looking forward to sharing some great comedy experiences with audiences. “The Reef Hotel Casino has a history with comedy, presenting names such as The Umbilical Brothers, Wil Anderson, Anh Do and even Eric Banner over the years,” he says. “We thought it was time to roll out a little safe comedy for the Sports Arena and take trivia to another level in Cairns with a full night of entertainment at the same time assisting some great causes. Oh, and that Terry Doyle absolutely blew me away with how funny he was at the Mornings in the Arena guest spot – so funny I had to give him his own show!”
Casino Cash Comedy Trivia launches its regular event with Steve Philp. The event will support Relay for Life, with 50% of the trivia winnings being matched and donated to the charity event. Trivia teams are encouraged to join together in numbers of four to six and nominate their desired Relay for Life team to support. Trivia winners will take home a swag of cash prizes, with first prize $1000, second prize $800, third prize $600 and second last even taking home a sweet $400, half of which will be donated to the winning groups’ Relay For Life team of choice.
Steve Philp is considered one of the country’s funniest and most versatile comedians. He has hosted Tropfest for the past eight years and was also the MC for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in 2011 and has featured on shows such as the NRL Footy Show, Australia’s Got Talent, Ready Steady Cook and Top Gear Australia. Steve launched his career performing on kids’ stage shows such as Barney the Dinosaur and Blinky Bill. He has also worked with The Wiggles on The Dorothy the Dinosaur show. He stepped over to comedy when he made the finals of Triple J Raw and Green Faces, and hasn’t ever looked back. Throughout his career, he has performed with the likes of Arj Barker and Tom Green, to name a few, and has also worked behind the scenes in radio. In 2008 he was one of only 14 Australian finalists to take part in the international Last Comic Standing where he travelled to Miami to participate.
Terry Doyle needs no introduction to Far North Queenslanders, he is already a formidable force on the local entertainment scene. A revered musician, he recently celebrated 50 years in music (in 2014) and has dabbled in every facet of the industry throughout his career, from both behind the scenes and fronting as a guitarist and vocalist. He started his career playing drums in high school bands and as they say, the rest is history. Now he is adding comedian to his extensive repertoire. The Comedy in the Arena will run monthly, similar to the popular Mornings in the Arena, with Terry has the joker host featuring his irreverent humour and tongue-in-cheek sing-alongs. The day will also feature a guest spot by a southern comedian. There will be all the big screen action with Terry’s And You Think You’ve Seen It All, some not so soothing music, prizes and plenty of laughs.
Trivia teams are encouraged to register with The Reef Hotel Casino guest services on (07) 4030 8822.
