FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MEDIA RELEASE
Sometimes songs just write themselves. This was certainly the case for the latest single by singer-songwriter Marcus Corowa, Nobody Knows. The catchy track has strong hooks and pared back instrumentation that showcases his undeniable talent as a songwriter and looks set to cement him on the independent music scene. With its raw emotion, appealing melody and soaring vocals, Nobody Knows is destined to be a single that defines this impressive musician’s career.
Marcus Corowa burst onto the Australian music landscape in 2012 with the release of his debut EP The Greater You, which won him a Deadly Award for Most Promising New Talent. Growing up in Bowen in Queensland, his earliest memories are playing guitar and eating mangoes. He moved to Brisbane as a teenager and got a job at Australia Post when he finished school. However, music was always in his blood, so it wasn’t long before he swapped stamps for amps and began pursuing his music career in 2009.
Since then he has performed at some major festivals including Sydney Festival, Yabun Festival and FUSE. He has also supported some of the industry’s biggest starts, including Christine Anu, Marcia Hines, Toni Childs and James Reyne to name a few. He is in the process of recording his second EP, produced by Damien Leith, due for release in early 2016. Nobody Knows is the first single from the forthcoming EP and an apt demonstration of what music lovers can expect from this stellar musician. Drawing on his Aboriginal and South Sea Islander roots, Marcus has a musical style that is diverse and evolving, and is perfectly reflected in the single release. The combination of blues, jazz, funk, soul and pop elements came together with edgy and strong beats, and delicate piano accompaniment to create a gem of a track.
Marcus says the track came together effortlessly in the studio, and indeed, that is much how the song was written. “I loved the direction Damien took,” he says. “It was recorded in a day, it was meant to be. As soon as Nobody Knows was written, I was really happy with it, so I tested it as some gigs a few days later. The audience really responded to the song, so I recorded it straight away. The chords, melody and lyrics all came at once – I just came home one day feeling really pissed off and frustrated about a whole bunch of things and started writing the song. It wasn’t a conscious choice, it just happened that way.”
Nobody Knows is penned about the loss and breakdown of a relationship – romantic or otherwise – and the feelings experienced when something comes to a sudden, definite end without explanation. “It’s about the feeling of loss and how you have no choice but to recover and move on from that, as hard as it is,” says Marcus. “I used the premise of a romantic break-up to express myself about a different kind of relationship breakdown from within my own life. In a way it was a cathartic to be able to express myself and get things off my chest, but also be able to disguise it as something that it’s not. I could get the emotions out but use a different story to express all those feelings.”
Picking Nobody Knows as the first single from his forthcoming EP captures the feeling behind his next release, which is jam-packed with heartfelt and emotionally driven songs. Titled Water and Air, the EP, much like his new single, is a stripped back and raw affair, acoustically driven to showcase his songwriting and vocal nuance.
Marcus Corowa’s new single Nobody Knows is released to radio on Friday 30th October 2015. His forthcoming second EP Water and Air is due for release in early 2016.
